Copperfield Kindergarten 2023-2024

 We have been working on a very special project with our Grade 4 buddies. Each person in Copperfield School will be making a clay heart to remind us how we are all connected and that Copperfield has heart! Today we glazed our clay hearts! This means we added special glaze paint and we will be firing them in the kiln. This will add a gloss to our hearts and the colours will become brighter. We cannot wait to see what they look like after they are fired.  Read a Thon upcoming dates: Monday March 4 - Bring your favourite book to school. Today is Pink Shirt Day!  We wore our pink or favourite shirts to stand up against bullying.  We made a promise to be kind and support one another! We practiced printing the letter K and how it stands for kindness!  Please ask me about all the different ways to show kindness. The morning class got to watch the kindness assembly this morning.  It was amazing to see all the ways our school is working towards belonging and lifting each other up every day! Read a Thon: With a new season just around the corner, let’s SPRING into reading!     Our 6th annual Copperfield Read-A-Thon will take place from March 4th   - 15 th  and you can already begin to gather sponsors to collect pledges for books read by students. Today we explored our sense of smell. We learned that when we smell something, it sends information to our brain. It could remind of something, make us feel calm and happy and keep us safe such as smelling smoke. We tested our sense of smell today and smelled different mystery smells and had to draw and write what we thought it was. Ask me to tell you the different things I smelled. We continue our investigation about 3D shapes and took a closer look at cylinders. We learned that cylinders can roll when it is on its side and you can stack them on top of each other because they have a flat sides. Ask me to tell you some things we thought of that are cylinders.  This week we focused on the letter B. Please review all the letters we have learned so far (below in reminders).  We continue to investigate our 5 senses and today we took a closer look at our sense of hearing. Our senses help our brain gather information. We learned that our sense of hearing can help keep us safe such as listening for the fire alarm, or a car close by. It can also help us feel calm like when we listen to birds chirp or music we enjoy. We tested our sense of hearing and had to guess what sounds we heard.  We then had to listen to 4 different times and guess what the sounds were and then draw a picture in our visual journal of our guess. Today we read the story: "My Heart Fills With Happiness."  We talked about how when our heart is happy, we feel calm.  Using the 5 senses, we talked about the different things that we see, hear, smell, taste and feel that make us happy and calm.  We also talked about some of the strategies we use to regulate our feelings when are not feeling calm.  Please ask me about my picture! Today we reviewed the Zones of Regulation and are taking a closer look at all of the different emotions that we might feel. We are learning to identify and name different emotions that we experience and also using our knowledge to identify how others are feeling. Today Mr. Magowan read us a special story called: "The Little Hummingbird."  In the story, the little humming bird worked really hard to do the best he could - even though he is small.  We talked about what are the little things we can do in this world to show kindness and make life better for everyone.  Please ask me about what small thing I can do as Kindergartener to help the world! We continue our learning in math about shapes and explored a 3D shape called a cube. Ask me to tell you what characteristics a cube has. We described that it has a 2D shape of a square on all sides and it has flat sides. This is different from a sphere and cone that we have learned. We are learning about the Lunar New Year. Today we learned about some of the traditions that people do during this celebration. Ask me to tell you about this holiday. I brought home a special red envelope today. Children will get these lucky red envelopes with money inside to bring good fortune for the new year.  We learned that there are 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac and our zodiac sign depends on what year we are born. We might be honest like a dragon or funny like a monkey! We learned that we were born in the year of the dog and that people born in this year are loyal, ready to help others, and friendly. Today we did a special watercolour painting.  We learned how to do a MONOCHROMATIC painting- that is a painting that uses only one colour!  It was fun to see how to do a whole painting using only one colour.  We practiced using thin and thick brushes, making a wash and painting trees.  This art activity taught me many skills for how to use watercolour paints.  Please ask me all about it!
