 Today we planted some special seeds to go with our secret gift for Mother's Day.  We did some procedural writing to practice our scientific writing!  An important part of our writing was to remember the order in which we planted the seeds, draw, colour and label our work.  Please ask me about my writing! Today we learned about the Indigenous artist Norval Morrisseau.  We looked at his artistic style and created our own bison art.  Over the last little while we have been learning about the importance of Bison in Indigenous communities and how it represent RESPECT.  When we look at the buffalo, we are reminded of how the Indigenous communities would use every part of their bodies, never wasting any part and how we can show that same respect to the things around us.  We used pencil, permanent markers and pastels to create a colourful bison in Norval Morrisseau's style.  Please ask me about my picture!  Here is the bison picture that we modelled our art after! Today we started a special project for Mother's Day where we had to use our very best colouring.  I practiced using detail to decorate, colouring carefully, using many colours and printing neatly!  It is a surprise, so please stay tuned for our finished gifts! Today we learned all about different kinds of birds' nests!  We read the story: "Mama built a little nest."  We enjoyed exploring nests at our discovery table and learning about which bird build nests.  Please ask me about what I learned today!   Questions to ask: -Which birds make nests? -What materials do birds us to make a nest? -What is a nest for?  We have been learning about the signs of spring. Although spring and winter have not made up their minds yet we are starting to see signs of spring! Some examples are that the weather is getting warmer, their are buds on the trees, the grass is starting to grow and change colour to green and we can see and hear birds. Ask me to tell you what I drew. We have been working on adding lots of details so that the person looking at our picture can understand the story we are wanting to tell. Today we played a math game to practice composing numbers up to 5.  These are all the combinations that we are working on.  Please ask me about the game and practice these with me!  Today was "Teacher of Day."  Congratulation to our top readers from the read-a-thon: Iqra, Luke, Chase, Bae and Jayesha!  These friends were our teachers for today, leading calendar, special Ipad time and taking us to the playground.  It was so much fun having our classmates as a teacher!  Our learning activity today was to use the Ipads and play on the app Starfall.  Starfall  is as great resource to reinforce literacy and numeracy ideas we have been learning through play! -There is NO SCHOOL on Friday -Information about our upcoming field trip was emailed out this week. Today we had special guests from Joan Cardinal Schubert presenting fairy tales to both AM and PM classes!  They acted out: "Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella."  We had such a great time watching the plays and asking questions!  Please ask me about my favourite part of the special presentation! We have been learning different ways to make the number 5. We continued to play the game "shake and spill" but today, we practiced representing our learning through drawing and writing numbers.  We have been talking about the different signs of spring and what we might notice outside as we say goodbye to winter and hello to spring. We learned that the trees will begin to "wake up" as the weather gets warmer and we will notice buds and then flower and leaves on branches. We collected branches from out side and created our own spring branches today. We are learning about different movements and why animals might move. We learned that animals move to find food, run away from predators and also to build a home.
