Copperfield Kindergarten 2023-2024

Today we learned all about spheres.  We talked about how spheres are not the same as a circle.  A circle is 2D and flat, but a sphere is 3D and round!  We looked around the classroom to see what things are spheres.  Please brainstorm with me at home to see what spheres you can find! In the afternoon we got to see the grade 3 assembly.  The grade 3's taught us about the burrowing owls and saving the planet!  We had a chance to show our best audience behaviour by sitting nicely, listening carefully and supporting our grade 3 friends. Today we started a new art project that takes a few steps!  Our first step is to paint a rainbow background.  During this painting activity, I practiced using a brush properly, making strokes and washing my paintbrush in between colours to make sure my rainbow doesn't turn to mud!  Please stay tuned to see what the final project looks like!  We read this story to look at different types of line before we started painting.  Today we learned how to plan out a story about our snowmen!  We followed a story plan to decide: -Who is in our story? -Where does it take place? -What is the problem? -How does the problem get solved? I brought home my story and my snowman today, so please ask me all about it! This week we learned about the letter c.  The letters that we should know by now are: -Aa, Mm, Tt, Pp, Dd, Ss, Ff, Ii, Nn, Oo and Cc - Please practice writing, recognizing these letters as well as making their matching sounds.  Today we read a story about snowmen at night!  We looked at the different parts of a snowman and got to build one ourselves!  We used plasticine to practice rolling balls and making shapes to form our snowman.  Please ask me about my snowman!  Today we learned that we have 5 senses. Ask me to tell you what they are (see, smell, taste, touch, hear). Our senses bring information to our brains. They also keep us safe. Imagine if we didn't have our sense of sight! That would be hard to get around and we will need to use other senses to help us. We focused on the sense of sight. Today we talked about the difference between 2D and 3D shapes.  We learned that 2D shapes are flat and we can clap our hands together to squish them.  3D shapes, however can be held in our hands and if we try to clap with them in our hands, we cannot make a sound!  Please help me find the different 3D shapes you have around the house! In the afternoon we got to watch a special presentation of "Cinderella" by the Alberta Musical Theatre company.  It was a rock-and-roll version of Cinderella with dancing and singing!  Please ask me all about it! Today we continued our exploration of story elements and focused on PROBLEM.  We talked about how the problem of a story is when something goes wrong, or needs to be fixed!  We read Jan Brett's "The Mitten" and brainstormed the different problems that we could find in the story.  Please ask me about my visual journal picture!  Today we played a math game that helped us to practice SUBITIZING.  Subitizing is where you look at a number, or group of objects and quickly identify the quantity without having to count individual parts.  For example, when my friend hold up 2 hands, I know right away that there are 10 fingers! The game we played helps us to practice subitize and write the numbers!  I will be bringing home my math game sheet, so I can tell you all about the game.  Please continue to practice these skills with me at home - I should be comfortable with recognizing and writing the number independently! We have been working on learning about different shapes. Ask me to tell you the names of the shapes (circle, triangle, rectangle, square). We are learning to identify them and to draw them as well. Today we used our knowledge of shapes to draw a house. We are also working on colouring our pictures neatly and using a variety of different colours to add detail.  Reminders:   -PM Kindergarten attends this Friday  *** Please ensure your child is dressed for this cold weather!  

 In math we continue to look at shapes in our world and identify them. Today we looked at what a rectangle is. We learned how it is different than a square. Ask me to tell you what I drew in my visual journal.  Today we continued practicing making patterns.  We decorated scarves to show that we can make a pattern with 2 elements and one with 3 elements.  Please ask me about the colours I used to make my scarf pattern!  Please practice making patterns with me at home.  There are many types of patterns I can make such as colour, sounds and actions!!  In math, we have been looking at different shapes and learning to draw them and identify them in our surroundings. We learned that a triangle has 3 sides and it is pointy. We drew triangles in our visual journals of things that we see in the world with the same shape. Ask me to tell you what I drew. We are beginning to label our pictures as well with the first initial sounds that we hear. Some of us are beginning to hear the middle and end sounds too! Welcome back!  We hope that everyone is well rested and had a wonderful break with their families.  It was so nice to see everyone's smiling faces again.  Today we shared about our holidays and talked about how everyone celebrates different things!  We talked about how even though people have different traditions, eat different foods and participate in different activities, they are what makes us all special and unique!  Please ask me what I drew in my visual journal. A highlight from today is that our pizza centre is now open!  We are excited to pretend to make pizzas, take orders and serve food to our classmates!  Check out our new centre!
