Today was our Kindergarten assembly.  Both AM and PM classes did an amazing job showing all of their learning.  A big thank you to all the families that came out to support their little ones- the big smiles on everyone's faces were so heartwarming! We are so proud of our Kindergarten classes and cannot believe how much they have grown this year!  Today we introduced a new heart word: Like.  As with all of our other heart words, we want to begin using them in various contexts to make meaning.  We used the word 'like' to write the sentence: "I like..." Students copied the sentence starter and finished the sentence with what they like.  Please practice with me at home! We continue our learning of composing numbers but are now extending to make 10. We used double sided counters and played "shake and spill" to help us find different ways to make 10. Today we learned about measuring the LENGTH of objects.  We practiced using the words: LONGER and SHORTER to describe length.  Using a classroom ruler, we went around the room measuring objects that might be longer or shorter than the ruler.  Please help me practice using these measurement words in my daily life! Today we made invitations to formally invite all Kindergarten families to our assembly on May 30th!  Students took their time to do their best copying, writing, drawing and colouring to decorate our invitations.  Don't forget to check your child's backpack for the invite! We have been working hard on making pairs of 5 in different ways. We have now taken all of that knowledge and created our own math stories today. Ask me to tell you about what my story was about. I had to think of what happened first, next and last. An example might be "once upon a time, there were 2 apples, and then 3 came along and now there are 5. Today we continued to practice making 5 through games and writing.  It is really important for us to build a strong number sense.  Being able to recognize, represent and write the numbers 1- 10 is our foundation for all numeracy and we continue to build confidence with the first 5 numbers by playing math games and writing.  Please practice these number pairings with me at home!   Do you know all 6 number pairs that make 5??? We had an amazing time today at the Seton Calgary Public Library. Today was Hats on for Mental Health Day!  We wore hats to show support for mental health and wellness.  In class we read the story "Who I am."  This story was all about saying kind words to yourself, when you begin to think un kind thoughts towards yourself.  An example that we really liked it when something is hard, I can tell myself that I can do it!  We drew in our visual journals ideas of words of kindness we can say to ourselves. **Tomorrow is Hat's on for Mental Health day so please wear your favourite hat to school.   We have been learning all nests and birds and today we did a guided drawing of a robin. We had to use really good listening ears and our eyes to follow the different steps. We learned to add detail so that our robin looks realistic and how to mix and shade with crayons. We also labeled a few of the body parts. Today we practiced 'counting on.'  We learned that it is important to be able to start counting from different parts of the number line.  We used a bear counter to hold our spot and practiced counting and forward from different parts of the number line.  When we get comfortable counting from anywhere on the number line, it helps us count, add and subtract with greater efficiency.   For example, if I want to add 5 + 8, I don't have to count my first five fingers, but count on from 5 to get to 8! Today we learned about bird's nests.  We talked about what sort of materials birds use to make their nests.  Using some found materials from outside and around our classroom, we were able to create a nest of our own!  We watched this video to learn more about robins and their nests.  Please ask me about my art!
